Troy University has unveiled a new initiative aimed at placing artificial intelligence at the center of modern business leadership with the launch of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education within the Sorrell College of Business. Located on the University’s Montgomery Campus, the Center is designed to help organizations and professionals understand, adopt, and manage AI technologies in practical, business-focused ways.
Rather than approaching AI purely from a technical perspective, the Center emphasizes leadership, strategy, and organizational impact. Its programs are intended for executives, managers, and professionals who need to assess AI opportunities, guide implementation efforts, and oversee data-driven transformation across their organizations.
The Center will offer research-driven learning opportunities, including academic coursework, to support Alabama’s business community as well as public sector and government organizations. These programs respond to a growing need for AI literacy among leaders responsible for workforce development, risk management, and operational decision-making.
“Artificial intelligence has moved beyond the domain of specialists,” said Sorrell College of Business Dean Dr. Judson Edwards. “Today’s leaders must understand how to apply AI responsibly, manage its risks, and ensure it is used ethically. This Center brings together expertise that will benefit our students, businesses, the military, and the broader community.”
Students enrolled in Center-supported programs will gain hands-on exposure to real-world AI applications, including case studies drawn from actual business challenges. Coursework will also address governance, compliance, and ethical considerations tied to AI deployment—areas increasingly important as regulations and public scrutiny evolve.
Center Executive Director Dr. Jim Locke said the goal is to equip professionals with the tools they need to navigate AI’s complexity while unlocking its potential value. “Our programs are designed to help organizations move from curiosity to capability,” Locke said.
University leaders note that the Center’s launch comes at a time when Alabama is emerging as a growing technology and innovation hub. Montgomery’s location, combined with Troy University’s established business programs, positions the Center to play a meaningful role in regional workforce development and applied research.
The Center will actively partner with local businesses, government agencies, and industry groups to promote responsible AI adoption that supports economic growth and improves operational performance. State leaders have welcomed the initiative, citing its alignment with Alabama’s broader technology goals.
State Legislator Mike Shaw, a member of the Governor’s GenAI Task Force, said Troy University’s leadership in AI education will benefit both the state and the nation. He praised the University for anticipating workforce needs and aligning its research and teaching efforts with emerging demands.
Amanda Senn, Director of the Alabama Securities Commission, also highlighted the value of the Center’s collaborative approach. She emphasized the importance of guiding businesses and investors through evolving AI policies and said the Commission looks forward to working with Troy University to strengthen Alabama’s role in AI innovation.
While the Center already offers certificate programs and consulting services, additional graduate-level options are on the horizon. University officials expect advanced programs, including a potential AI-focused Master of Business Administration, to be introduced in the near future. The Center is also working closely with Troy University’s AI Forward Committee to expand AI integration across academic programs.
“As organizations increasingly rely on AI to improve efficiency, enhance customer engagement, and create new revenue opportunities, this Center is positioned to become a leader in AI management education,” Locke said.
With its emphasis on strategy, leadership, and real-world application, Troy University’s new Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education aims to prepare today’s professionals—and tomorrow’s leaders—for an AI-driven business landscape.
